Work Session

Both the work session and the regular City Council meeting were held on Tuesday, May 4. The work session meeting, which started at 4 p.m., only had executive session items on the agenda.

 Mayor Brian Loughmiller read a proclamation designating May as Asian Pacific American Heritage month to honor the contributions of Asian Pacific Americans to our community.

All consent agenda items passed. Several agenda items included plans for ongoing expansion of several parks and recreation projects.

With item 10-206, City Council approved an amendment to the city’s FY09-10 budget to include three new authorized city Information Technology positions. 

Council also reappointed Charles McKissick to the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) board. The board is made up of two representatives for 13 member cities. Currently, McKinney is represented by Joe Joplin and McKissick, whose term ends May 31 at which time he will start his new term.

 Second Saturdays in Downtown McKinney

Come enjoy an evening of art, shopping, music, food and spirits this Saturday in downtown McKinney. Explore local art galleries, listen to great local and regional talent and taste some of the area’s best eateries. Many places in downtown McKinney will keep their doors open from 7 – 10 p.m. this Saturday.

 National Tourism Week May 8-16The McKinney Convention & Visitors Bureau (MCVB) encourages McKinney residents to keep tourism dollars at home by being tourists in their own town during the celebration of the annual National Travel and Tourism Week, which kicks off Saturday, May 8 and runs through Sunday, May 16.

The MCVB will recognize the special week with the kick-off of a video contest based on the “Destination McKinney” theme in which people are encouraged to depict what makes McKinney special to them and showing their favorite sights and sounds around the city. The contest will run throughout the summer, ending on Labor Day (September 6).

Residents and visitors alike can pick up a Visitors Guide and other materials at the MCVB office at 1575 Heritage Drive, Suite 100, located just south of W. University/U.S. 380 and east of Redbud. Visit www.VisitMcKinney.com for more information.

Vote! Bond Election On May 8, 2010 residents will have the opportunity to vote in a Bond Election to decide the future of funding for specific municipal projects in McKinney. The bond package on the ballot includes six propositions totaling $51.35 million centered on land acquisition, parks and recreation, public safety and street improvements.

The following propositions appear on the bond election, with voters deciding whether or not the McKinney City Council is authorized to issue general obligation bonds for these projects.

  • $12.5 million for park and recreational facilities, including land acquisition, construction, improvements and expansion
  • $11.35 million for public safety facilities, including land acquisition, construction and improvements
  • $15.5 million for acquiring, constructing and improving streets and associated drainage improvements within the city, including sidewalks and railroad crossings, traffic control and signalization devices, street lighting, public streetscaping and landscaping improvements, curb and gutter replacements and related improvements
  • $5 million for public works facilities improvements, construction and land acquisition
  • $4 million for construction and improvement to flood control facilities including creeks, dams and lakes
  • $3 million for connectivity and improvements of municipal parking facilities in the Historic Downtown area

Police Memorial May 11The McKinney Police Department will host a Candlelight Vigil Memorial Ceremony on May 11 at 7 p.m. at the Public Safety Building, 2200 Taylor Burk Drive. This ceremony honors the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty while protecting our communities and safeguarding our democracy.

The Candlelight Vigil is a part of National Police Week, which takes place this year from May 9-15. The general public is invited and encouraged to attend this free ceremony.
 


Texas Trash-offThe City of McKinney is hosting a Texas Trash-Off event on Saturday, May 15 to make McKinney a cleaner, greener city.

The Don’t Mess with Texas Trash-Off is the single largest one day cleanup event in the state. Trash-Off is an opportunity for McKinney residents to clean their property and volunteer to help clean the city. Civic groups, homeowners associations, churches and individuals are encouraged to participate.

Volunteer teams can pre-register for the event until May 13 to reserve a t-shirt for all team members. Or you can sign up at the event on May 15 from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. Team members will pick up trash at assigned locations across McKinney to compete for prizes, and lunch is provided. 
 

The event starts with check-in at Old Settlers Park, 1201 E. Louisiana at 8 a.m. For more information or to sign up, call the Office of Environmental Stewardship at 972-547-7335.


Food Fight at MPACVisit MPAC from May 20 – 23 for the final show of the Spring 2010 Season – “Food Fight!” The musical comedy is a hilarious and poignant look at the most universally discussed topic we all face on a daily basis: food – and of course all the pleasures and neuroses that comes with it. It’s ladies in a women’s-only gym, belting out hysterical song parodies about food, diets, exercise, plastic surgery, and cooking shows. ”Food Fight” is a recipe for fun!
